i found this article on cnn.com.  the title says it all:
"10 dumbest job-interview moves..."
what are some things YOU heard that people did or said at a job interview?

Here are the top ten:

The job hunter...

1. "...told me to hire him because he was allergic to unemployment."

2. "... said that we should hire him because he would make a great addition to our softball team."

3. "...said he should get the job because he had already applied three times and he felt that it was now his turn to be hired."

4. "...said we had nice benefits, which was good because he was going to have to take a lot of leave in the coming year."

5. "... drafted a press release announcing that we had hired him."

6. "... explained that he had no relevant experience for the job he was interviewing for, but his friend did."

7. "... delivered his entire cover letter in the form of a rap song."

8. "...told me she wanted the position because she wanted to get away from working with people."

9. "...brought his mother to the interview and let her do all the talking."

10. "...when our company moved to Texas, gave us his resume in a ten-gallon hat."

edit - breaking news from the AP - Transformers is teaming up with Spiderman to make Armageddon 2 and Dirty Dancing 2.  Should be another hot summer of sequels in 2008.

"broke summer movies"

i am sitting in my cube (bored out of my mind) and decided to list out the movies i saw and grade them.  i only watched three, so this will be a short post.

1.  Ocean's 13 - a solid "B":  good recovery from Ocean's 12.  pacino was solid in the movie.  i am glad that they came back to vegas.  i thought they could have had a better cameo for matt damon's dad - someone like robert duvall or something to take it over the top.  overall, entertaining.

2.  Transformers - a solid "D":  i knew that this movie was going to be broke.  anything that michael bay touches stinks (i.e. Pearl Harbor, Armageddon).  how can a normal car or truck transform into a 5 story building???  also, the worst scene in the movie (i almost left) is when the autobots were hiding around the house and the dude's dad could not see them!  man!  the cartoon movie was so much better!  if i wanted to see some cheezy love story with action, i would have watched Pearl Harbor, Armageddon...wait, i did....what a waste of time and money....extremely disappointed....

3.  Spiderman 3 - a solid "F":  what the freak happened in this movie?  i was so excited to see this i even paid a premium to watch it in IMAX.  man, what a complete waste of money.  who also laughed when dunst started singing as some jazz singer?  i almost through my drink at the screen.  and what was with tobey dancing around?  was this Spiderman 3 or Dirty Dancing 2?!?!  this series needs to go through a makeover just like Batman Begins (in which Christian Bale kicked ***) or the New Bond (in which Daniel Craig kicked ***).

edit (thanks to ian and elvira for reminding me that i did watch another movie.)

4. Knocked Up - a solid "C+":  was expecting a lot from the creators of  40 Year Old Virgin.  there were some isolated funny scenes and i laughed at them.  but seth rogan cannot handle the main duties of a lead actor.  he is def. NOT a steve carell.  he is a good side man just like paul rudd.  overall, this movie was OK, average at best.  for those who did not watch it yet...RENT IT.

5.  Bourne Ultimatum - a solid "A":  man o man!  just got back from watching matt damon kicking some serious behind!  from the first minute on it was a crazy joyride.  i was amazed in so many of the stunts...total cat and mouse movie all the way to the end.  after watching so many broke movies, i am somewhat satisfied because of this one.  i am not saying that this is going to win an oscar by any stretch of the imagination...but if you want to sit on the edge of your seat from the first sequence, this is the movie for you!  btw, sunny loves matt damon...i hate to admit it, but he is a STUD!

all in all this summer?  stay home and watch Entourage!

what are your thoughts on the movies YOU saw this summer?

edit - my guess for early oscar talks - "american gangster" - you heard it hear first...danzel, crowe, ridley scott...watch out baby!

"The Anti-Maggiano’s"

Sabatino’s
4441 W. Irving Park Road
Chicago, IL 60641

http://sabatinoschicago.com/

This past Friday night, a group of friends got together to celebrate the birthday of an extremely “Hot” woman.  From the recommendation of the Kim’s, we met up in Old Irving Park and ate dinner at Sabatino’s.  Sabatino’s is a 1970’s throwback, Italian restaurant.  Even as I saw the restaurant from the outside, I had to remind myself what era I was in!  Sabatino’s offers a wide variety of pastas, meats, seafood, and desserts.  Every entrée comes with a side salad AND soup (Minestrone or Soup du Jour).  A homemade loaf of bread is also offered at each table.  For those who order a non-pasta dish, the entrée includes a side of spaghetti, mostacolli, or potatoes.  There is also a decent variety of wines and alcohol.

As we sat down to order the food, my wife and I strategized what to order.  Since we heard that EVERYTHING was good, we wanted to make sure that we ordered both a pasta dish and a non-pasta dish to ensure a complete experience. My wife went ahead and ordered the “Fettuccini A Mare Chiaro,” linguine mixed with calamari, clams, mussels, and shrimp in a white, garlic sauce.

I ordered the “Chicken Sabatino” based on the waiter’s recommendation.  This dish is one of their house specials.  The dish consists of a boneless chicken breast stuffed with long grain rice and prosciutto accompanied by a sauce containing mushrooms, olives and potatoes.  First off, I was blown away by the portions!  Each entrée could feed two people.  The pasta was excellent but I was truly amazed by the “Chicken Sabatino.”  I am not a huge fan of chicken; however, this chicken was really juicy and maintained all the flavors from the spices.  The long grain rice also packed lots of flavor.  Further, the mushrooms, olives and potatoes really enhanced the chicken.  I highly recommend this dish.

Another dish that my wife recommends is not on the menu.  The specials for that night included a risotto dish.  Everyone in the party took a bite and loved it.  So if you go, ask the waiter to see if the risotto is available.  The desserts were excellent as well.  We had a Tiramisu, Bananas Foster, and the Baked Alaska for two.  Here is a picture of the Baked Alaska.

If you are looking for lots of food at decent prices, Sabatino’s is the place.  Most dishes range from $13-$20.  Reservations are recommended especially if you are party is going to be more than 4 people.  Everyone must be present in order to be seated.  There is also a piano bar that is open on Fridays and Saturdays.

+'s:
1.  Big portions.  Leftovers are a given.

2.  Easy parking (complimentary valet parking or street parking on Irving Park Rd.)
3.  Straight out of the Godfather – if you are looking for a Maggiano’s experience, do not come here.  Don’t get me wrong.  I like Maggiano’s.  However, if you want to feel like you are part of the Corleone family, this is the place to be.  It is dark, smoky, dark, charming and did I mention dark?

4.  Service was excellent.  We had a party of 13.  Instead of sticking us with one waiter, they sent two.  This made the experience all the more pleasant.

-'s
1. No refills on soda!  I still do not get why soda is not unlimited in EVERY restaurant!  One of the guys in our group was wise to ask if there were free refills.  The waitress smiled and said, “NO.”  So if you are looking for free refills stick with the water or iced tea.
2.  A bit crowded.  Again, there are only so many restaurants that can fit 13 people comfortably so what can you really do...

3.  No refills of soda! – see 1.

AVERAGE COST PER PERSON:  $17 ($25 with wine)
OVERALL RANKING (out of 5):  Cinque!
CONCLUSION:  If you want to dine like the Italians do, please drive on down to Sabatino’s!

"Where's the Bife?"

Tango Sur
3763 N. Southport Ave.
Chicago, IL 60613
www.tangosur.qpg.com

Last night, my small group (recommended by 'Punnie' and 'Joe') dined at Tango Sur located in Lakeview near Wrigley Field.  Tango Sur is an Argentine grill restaurant that is known primarily for its "bife" (aka - beef, steak, red-meat.)  For the non-red meat lovers, the menu also offers a wide variety of chicken and fish dishes.  Hot bread rolls are served at each table.  Most entrees are accompanied by a fresh and simple garden salad.  The main entree is served with either potato wedges or mashed potatoes.  The other item of note is that Tango Sur is BYOB.

As I opened the menu, my eyes were set on just one thing, the STEAK.  I read over the descriptions and decided to go with the "Angosto" (NY Strip Steak)

Others ordered the popular "Churrasco" which is their 12 oz. sirloin steak and "Bife Vesuvio" which is a steak stuffed with cheese and spinach.  I wanted to just keep it simple with a plain, no-distractions filled steak.  As soon as I sunk my teeth into the steak (served medium-rare), I thought I was in heaven!  The meat was very tender and flavorful.  I suggest dipping the meat their special sauce called chimichurri sauce. The steak was seasoned with Argentine spices so the steak was packed with a powerful taste that I have not experienced before.  I was able to sample the other meats, but this one was the best by far.  I savored each bite.  The potato wedges were great.  I prefer to eat my steaks with a side of raw onions to accentuate the flavor.  Mighty tasty indeed!

The added bonus of this meal was that it was so economical.  Where can you find a strip steak this good in Chicago for $20?  The $20 includes the rolls, salad, and potatoes.  It is rare that I am thinking about a steak a day after I ate one.  However, as I am finishing up my work, all I can think about is BIFE!  I am hoping to make another trip to Tango Sur sooner rather than later.

+'s:
1.  Cost, Cost, and Cost!
2.  Decor was nice.  Romantic setting with candlelight and a classical guitar player strumming Argentinean tunes (although he did play at one time, Clapton's "Tears in Heaven")
3.  BYOB

-'s
1.  Service was OK.  I asked for a side of raw onions but instead got a bowl of cooked onions.  They charged me $5 for their mistake.  Make sure to state your request explicitly and repeat it if necessary.
2.  The restaurant is on the smaller side so expect to be a little cramped if you are eating with a group.  The place gets warm when it is packed so make sure to have some extra napkins around and a glass of ice water.
3.  RSVP is a key if coming with a group larger than 4 people.  I noticed plenty of people standing around since they did not make RSVP's.

AVERAGE COST PER PERSON:  $25
OVERALL RANKING (out of 5):  CINCO!
CONCLUSION:  I highly recommend to you all to head down to Tango Sur and grab a great steak (and don't forget to bring the wine!)

"what to do next..."

as most of you know, the illini bball team is over for the season.  therefore, i am shifting gears to one of my other passions, FOOD.

with the suggestion of my wife i will now devote this site to my opinions and reviews of various eating establishments that i have been to from all over the world! (ok, mostly the chicagoland area.)  i want to provide a "common man's" point of view of various restaurants ranging from hotdog stands to steakhouses and carry-out chinese food to korean galbi houses.  since, again, i live in the chicagoland area, most of the places i will review will be from here.  however, on special editions, i will add my reviews of places i visited in various cities/countries.

i will try and provide a review of different places periodically.  not that my opinion matters, but  i am sure that you will lean toward trusting a man that weighs over 2 bills than a skinny dude.

SO, for my 1st post, i will review....PHOTO'S HOT DOG located in two locations, Mt. Prospect and Palatine, IL.

today, as i was walking on the treadmill, i started to get a craving for a CHEESEBURGER (that is why i am still over 2 bills.)  since i was in palatine, i started to think about what was around and decided to go with Photo's.  i noticed at times that they had deals so i went on-line after my intense work-out.  as i looked, today's special was not up to par.  however, there was a link for coupons and i found one for a free cheeseburger with a purchase of fries/drink.  so, i hopped in my car, gave them the internet coupon, and ate the food.

the cheeseburger was amazing!  it is chargrilled on the spot so it had the char/bar-b-q taste.  the burger was cooked to about medium-well.  also, i love red onions so i had some extra put on.  the buns were nice and soft and the cheese was nicely melted onto the burger.  there was a little bit too much mayo but other than that it was pretty good for the value.

the total price for the meal:  $5
overall ranking (out of 5):  4

so if you are in the mood for a good cheeseburger and you happen to be in the palatine area, i recommend PHOTO'S.

(**note:  since this is my first review, please leave me any suggestions on how to make this site better...thanks!)
